Enjoy an Anxiety-Free Dentist Trip

Enjoy an anxiety free dentistry trip at Cunnington Dental.A lot of people avoid the dentist because of fear and anxiety. At Cunnington Dental, we understand these fears, and we would like to announce that we are an anxiety-free dental office. Whether you are here for a prolonged procedure or a routine exam and cleaning, you never have to fear the dentist again. How do we do it? We provide you with an anxiety-free space by using conscious sedation. When we employ conscious sedation, you will feel relaxed and will experience little or no anxiety.

So What Is Conscious Sedation?

Conscious sedation is a technique we use to relieve anxiety. You are given a pill to take about an hour before your visit is scheduled to begin. The pill is a mild sedative, usually in the benzodiazepine class of drugs. These drugs are very safe, have adverse interactions with very few medications and are not addictive. They have been around since the 1960’s and have decades of research history documenting them. Also, they have few, if any, side effects.

When we use conscious sedation, you will see what a difference it makes in your dental visit. Once the drug takes effect, you will lose your anxiety. You will feel completely relaxed. The best part for you and the major difference between this and complete sedation is that you are alert and awake the whole time.

How Is It Used During the Procedure or Cleaning?

When we begin the procedure or the cleaning, you will know exactly what is going on around you. You will be able to hear us talking, and you will understand what is being said. If you have a problem or want us to stop for a second, you will be able to signal that to us. You will also be able to follow instructions that we give you which makes your cleaning or procedure go more smoothly.

Who Else Can Benefit from Conscious Dentistry?

Conscious dentistry doesn’t just benefit patients who are afraid of the dentist; there are other reasons to choose oral sedation for your next dental visit. We use numbing agents before we begin to minimize the pain. The problem is that some people don’t react to them and it doesn’t have the effect we need. Oral sedatives can be used instead of the numbing agents and can achieve the same effect.

If you have a fear of needles, you will want to consider conscious sedation. To apply the numbing agents, we have to use a needle, and for people with a fear of needles, this is reason enough to avoid the dentist. That reason is now gone.

The third reason to use conscious sedation is if you have a sensitive gag reflex. Numbing doesn’t help with a gag reflex, but conscious sedation does because it relaxes all of the muscles.

The final benefit of conscious sedation is that sometimes you need multiple procedures to be performed, but sometimes we can’t perform multiple procedures because the numbing agents won’t last long enough. Conscious sedation changes that and it enables you to have multiple procedures done in a single visit.
